Enviado por agodoy el

This article studies the period preceding the current opioid epidemic by leveraging the 1974-1982 RAND Health Insurance Experiment. We document novel facts about the widespread use of prescribed opioids, prescriber characteristics, and diagnoses linked to opioid prescriptions in what we refer to as Wave Zero. Additionally, we exploit random assignment to health insurance plans to estimate how opioid use adjusts to differences in insurance generosity.

Zero-Sum Views and Support for Redistribution Across Borders

Enviado por aad el

This paper provides causal evidence on how zero-sum framing affects support for global redistribution and economic openness. In a preregistered survey experiment with a large UK sample, we show that a zero-sum prime about general social and economic interactions, without reference to redistribution, reduces revealed support for international redistribution by lowering the probability of donating to an international anti-poverty NGO. Effects on stated support for global redistribution, globalization, and migration are directionally similar but not distinguishable from zero.
